We’re rewinding all the way back to 1979 when big hair, bell bottoms, and disco were in full swing! 🪩🎶 That year, our halls were buzzing with excitement as the titles of Mr. and Miss Class (7th–12th Grade) were proudly crowned. 👑
From feathered hair to wide collars, these students rocked the style of the times and represented their classes with pride. 💃🕺 Just imagine the shiny disco balls and Saturday night vibes in the background!
Here’s to celebrating the leaders, the trendsetters, and the all-around spirit of VBHS ’79. 🧡 Let’s hear it for the good ol’ days when Polaroids captured our memories and friendship bracelets were the height of fashion!
Drop a 🎶 or 🪩 in the comments if you remember the late ‘70s vibes—or better yet, share your favorite 1979 memory below!

This morning, all students who ride the bus participated in their Bus Evacuation Drill. These drills are an important part of keeping our students safe—teaching them what to do and how to evacuate quickly and safely in case of an emergency. 🚨
A big thank you to our bus drivers, staff, and students for making this drill a success! 👏 Together, we’re building confidence and preparedness for every rider, every day. 💛

This week, we’re proud to spotlight Officer Brent Hickerson — a 2008 graduate of Van Buren County High School who has come full circle to serve and protect our students! 🦅
After gaining experience at the Bledsoe County Correctional Complex and the McMinnville Police Department, Officer Brent returned home to Van Buren County, where he now serves as the School Resource Officer for Spencer Elementary.
In addition to keeping our school safe, Officer Brent is making a lasting impact by leading DARE classes for Van Buren County students — teaching the importance of wise choices and healthy living. 🚓👮♂️📚
We are grateful for Officer Brent’s dedication, leadership, and heart for our schools. Thank you for investing in our students and our community! 🙌

In 2024, the Tennessee General Assembly passed legislation requiring firearm safety instruction in schools, outlined in Tennessee Code Annotated §49-6-1016. Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, all Tennessee school districts, including Van Buren County Schools, will provide annual, age-appropriate instruction on firearm safety for students in grades K–12.
During September Eagle Encounters at SES and VBHS, students will be learning about Firearm Safety from our SRO’s Officer Brent and Officer Clint, Chief Garing, Devin Simmons with Fall Creek Falls, Kyle Walling with TWRA, and Trooper Whitson.
We’re also partnering with Be SMART, a national campaign that promotes safe firearm storage and helps adults have important conversations to keep kids safe — not just at home, but also at friends’ houses, babysitters, and other places children visit.
Look for a Be SMART postcard coming home in the upcoming weeks. You can learn more about firearm safety and how to keep kids safe at Be SMART for Kids.
Plus, the Tennessee Be SMART Team is offering free virtual webinars all year to share helpful info, strategies, and ways to talk about safe firearm storage with others. Interested? Sign up here: bit.ly/45E2zP0
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our children safe!
