Van Buren County Schools Families,
This morning, a report was submitted through the StopIt reporting app that indicated that a student "had a gun." This prompted our internal safety team and administration to immediately place the campus on lockdown. The investigation revealed that a student had made a comment about having a gun in a joking manner. Another student overheard this statement, did the right thing, and reported it. Fortunately, there was never a real threat to student or staff safety and the regular school day resumed shortly after.
Parents and families, please join our efforts in talking with your students about appropriate conversations. Safety is of utmost importance and not something to be taken lightly. We must all use our words wisely and in a manner that builds a safe learning environment.
Thank you to our students and staff for responding to the situation and taking it seriously. Thank you to our families for your concern and for the love you show our students each day. We are blessed to live in this community.
Jared Copeland
Director of Schools
